The fourth-generation MX-5 is notably compact, measuring 105 mm (4 inches) shorter and significantly lighter by 100 kg (220 lb) compared to its predecessor, resulting in a curb weight of around 1,000 kg (2,200 lb). It incorporates Mazda's Skyactiv technology and offers two naturally aspirated direct-injection petrol engines. The base model boasts a 1.5 L engine with 96 kW (129 hp; 131 PS), while pre-2019 American and Canadian-market models come equipped with a 2.0 L engine, delivering 116 kW (155 hp; 157 PS) at 6000 rpm and 201 N⋅m (148 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4600 rpm.[11] Mazda has also replaced the previous hydraulic power steering system with their new Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system.[12]
The car is available with both a six-speed manual transmission and a six-speed automatic transmission. Inside, the cockpit, steering wheel, and infotainment system closely resemble those found in the 2014 Mazda3. The MX-5 comes standard with a manually operated fabric roof that can be effortlessly opened or closed in a matter of seconds.
Interestingly, the fourth-generation MX-5 has gained popularity among die-cast toy car manufacturers like Tomica, Hot Wheels, and Matchbox, all of which have released their own versions of the car in the market.
